Seizing back pain – 46 year old male – Resolved after one acupuncture session
This case outlines a patient with seizing lower back pain whose suffering was resolved after one acupuncture session
Visit 1: January 22, 2026
Presentation: Patient (46 year old male) had hurt his back last week and currently his lower back had seized up like a knot. Pain travels up and down bladder meridian and was centred at level of L4-L5.
| Tongue: Pale, vertical crack down middle, coating yellow/greasy | Pulse: Deep, slippery, fluttery | Dx: Bladder channel pain |
Assessment and basis:
Lower back pain can usually be treated quite successfully at our clinic. We typically assess the patient and determine whether acupuncture will work on its own or whether a combination of acupuncture and herbal treatment is required. This patient was physically active and I predicted that acupuncture would work well on its own based on prior experience, and so no herbal treatments were prescribed and patient received acupuncture treatment only. This is considered a “simple” case. For a more complicated case of back pain please view our other case study here.
Acupuncture Points used: SJ5, Yangchi, HT3, HT8, BL31
Phone follow up with patient two days later and was told that pain had mostly subsided. Informed patient that the little bit of remainder pain would likely disappear on its own after the acupuncture treatment had taken the edge off, and patient would likely not need another treatment. Patient returned for treatment of other issues in March 2026 and verified that pain had subsided shortly after phone call.
