Diabetes and High Cholesterol

We have helped patients who prefer natural healing modalities maintain normal A1C/glucose fasting and cholesterol levels, often with minimal dietary restrictions. There are overlapping factors in the causes of both diabetes (Type II) and high cholesterol from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and similarities in the treatment of both conditions. Often what I observe clinically is that there is a lack of proper circulation in the abdomen (where visceral organs such as pancreas, spleen, liver gallbladder are situated) and patients often feel bloating or distension in the abdomen; this is often a root cause of the issue and needs to be taken into consideration within the treatment process.

Diabetes-specific symptoms

With diabetes there can often be other symptoms that appear prior to blood testing, for example severe night sweats, weight loss, fatigue, and/or frequent urination. Diabetes is typically considered a deficiency disorder in Traditional Chinese Medicine, as the loss of fluids can lower the concentration of water in the body, and raise the concentration of glucose, resulting in elevated blood sugar values, so often the treatment will involve reducing these symptoms and restoring the fluids in the body in order to balance the glucose concentration in the body.

Treatment protocol

The treatment is via herbal tea taken daily combined with weekly or bi-weekly acupuncture treatments for a total of 3-4 weeks, at which point patients are urged to obtain a requisition for bloodwork from their primary physician to verify that fasting glucose, and more importantly A1C or cholesterol, has decreased. Typically patients are asked to avoid alcohol during the treatment process.
